My mom has a beautiful oak buffet and hutch that was one of the first pieces of furniture that she and my dad bought when they got married and built their house. The problem is that it now looks dated, and though she wants to refresh her dining room, she is reluctant to let me paint it. I understand her emotional attachment to keeping the piece as is, but I think that painting and updating it will only renew her love for it and allow it to become the star of the room, and possibly the whole house. So I've put together a sampling of some great painted hutches to try to convince her:
And below you can see the design board for her dining room, with the painted hutch as a key component. I like the idea of painting most of it in a distressed off-white, and leaving the top as is. Her home is rustic country style, and budget is low, so that means painting the existing blond wood table and chairs as well. I suggest staining the table to match the wood left on the hutch, which is dark. And the chairs would be painted a light blue. This will flow with the wallpaper and with the adjoining kitchen, where the countertops are blue. The floral paper is wallpaper from Home Depot, and the striped fabric from Kravet is for a table runner and possibly cushions for the dining chairs. I love these simple lights for above the table, and she has many great baskets and a pitcher collection to display.
How could she not love this? I will let you know if it all works out!
