I saw this strange 'flower' on the branches of a bare fruit tree as I walked around the land at Earthtalk. What could it be? It reminded me of kauri gum.
When I inquired later, I discovered that this is a Golden Queen peach tree, and it seems that the tree has some wounds, out of which these secretions have bled and solidified.
I'm remembering the talk I attended last week by Lynne, whose family had been holidaying on a beach in Samoa when the terrible tsunami struck two years ago. She spoke so movingly about the trauma— she who is a trauma therapist and knows the effects so well, yet went through it all herself. Out of the trauma came some extraordinary transformations. I felt moved after hearing her speak of the healing process and the kindnesses that helped her family after they ran for their lives, leaving everything behind.
Seeing these strange shapes on the Golden Queen reminded me of the unexpected beauty that may sometimes flower from deep wounding.

Stockholm Attic Studio

Feeling very inspired by the tiny attic studio of Swedish interior designer (and TV home shows celebrity) Jimmy Schonning — it's not only dramatic and stylish, but really clever in its use of space, too. More photos and info here. Via Dwell.

Sea Urchin Anyone?
ウニ
For sushi lovers in Japan, sea urchin (uni in Japanese) is one of the top three delicacies. The color of sea urchin (see below) ranges from yellow to bright orange. Sea urchin sushi consists of the gonads of the sea urchin.
When eating sea urchin sushi, a few drops of soy sauce may be applied directly on top of the sea urchin.
Sea urchin sushi is widely available in sushi shops in Japan including kaiten (rotating) sushi shops. But someone looking for freshness may want to head to a specialty shop such as those found in department stores. The sea urchin pictured above was purchased at Kintetsu Department Store in Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture.

Indian Bridal Couture
We spoke to ace designer Tarun Tahiliani, who said, "Across all cultures, the occasion of a wedding is important and especially more so in India. I am trying to highlight the effort that goes into adorning the bride and groom, so that this milestone in their lives becomes one of beauty, elegance and pride."
Take a look at Tahiliani's latest bridal collection, created especially for the Indian bride and groom, old school style. As for their design the Indian wedding gowns have as main characteristic the richness in models, the embellishments added. For us it may be too much, a too decked out vision with a slight way to a cheesy, tacky look. Still, even being so uploaded in this way they express the highest stage of a woman’s beauty, a strong accent of its features.
As for the cut of such a dress type firstly to be mentioned is that it covers everything. Its components are about a short top that covers the breasts part, shown the belly and has round neckline with shorts sleeves. But this side is seen only by the grooms, as in front of others men the bride reveals nothing more but its face. The skirt is a long one; in fact a long material in which the bride is wrapped with overlapped sides. A veil is added and it covers half of the head and let it to fall on the shoulders.

Kyoto Keirin
On a recent day at the races at the Kyoto Keirin track in Mukomachi, we took in a few track cycling races, lost a bit of money, partook of one cup of Cup Sake, and met a few of the punters.
The track is 400 meters long and one race is five laps, or 2,000 meters.
The first 2-3 laps are slow going, with a lead bike taking the nine racers out. At that point, the lead bike drops out, and the action begins.
It is a cat-and-mouse game, followed by sudden bursts of great speed.
On race day the men - the crowd is 99% male - place bets in the intervals between races. Nearly all carried racing forms, well marked, and other study aids.
Access
Hankyu Railways: Get off at Higashi Mukomachi Station. There is a free shuttle on race days, or it can be walked in 15 minutes.
Japan Railways (JR): Get off at Mukomachi Station, the third local stop from Kyoto Station. There is a free shuttle on race days, or it can be walked in 20 minutes.

A Delicious Brew

An early 1800s brewery overlooking a boat-filled harbour is now the summer home of Lars and Mary and their two children — and it was the sunny courtyard inside as well as the lovely view outside that finally sold them on it, despite the work involved to renovate. The bright and relaxed results definitely made it all worth it. More here. Via Sköna hem.
